Water Rail in the feeding station

Regent's Park

Cetti's Rail: one was in the reed bed by the Rail Ditch, area 2.
Water Rail: 2 birds at least were present one in the Rail Ditch while another was heard in the Wetland Pen, area 32.

It was great to finally see a rail using the feeding station

What do you put in the feeding station for the Rails?
We first started feeding the Water Rails in 2008 with Marine Sea Duck. This is a feed that we give the fish eating species in the Ornamental Waterfowl Collection. This was succesful until last year when no birds were recorded wintering in the park. The birds wintering in the Rail Ditch this year seemed a little reluctant to try the feed at first so I gave them a choice of sea duck or wheat. Then at the end of last week I saw one bird try both foods. At present the wheat is easier to give them as the gulls aren't keen on it.
